SOLAS CSCS 180 Degree Excavator – Experienced Operator

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, it is mandatory for individuals operating a 180 Degree Excavator to possess a Solas CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) 180 Degree Excavator ticket.

The SOLAS CSCS 180 Degree Excavator training course is intended for experienced 180 Degree Excavator operators and aims to raise their awareness of the hazards associated with operating this machine. It is designed to equip them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to operate the 180 Degree digger safely and legally.

What you need to know

  • Minimum age requirement for 180 Excavator Training: 18 years old
  • Duration of 180 Excavator course: 1 Day
  • Maximum number of attendees per 180 Excavator course: 3
  • Requirements for 180 Excavator training: SOLAS Safe Pass Card | Irish PPS number | Photo ID | Passport-sized Photo | good written & spoken English | PPE gear | minimum 6 Months experience as a trainee 180 Excavator operator in the past 2 years | completed candidate pack form.
  • Certification for 180 Excavator training: SOLAS CSCS 180 Degree Excavator ticket / card (valid for 5 years), QQI certificate.

Assessments

This course requires candidates to undergo a classroom theory test and an on-site practical assessment.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a Solas CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card for the 180 Excavator and a special-purpose QQI certificate.

Course Content

SOLAS CSCS 180 Degree Excavator – Experienced Operator Content

The following topics are covered during the CSCS 180 Degree Excavator course:

  • Legislation & Regulations – Regulations, obligations and risks affecting the 180-degree Excavator operator.
  • Pre-use checks – Pre-start and running checks in conjunction with operator’s handbook,  preparing the Excavator for work.
  • Manoeuvring the excavator on-site –  Travelling around the site and road.
  • Preparing for excavation – Selecting the correct buckets / accessories, considering the soil type, positioning the machine, minimising risks.
  • Excavation – Setting up the machine, excavating to line and level, spoil positioning, excavating techniques for differing types of soil.
  • Pre-start checks & maintenance – Location of pre-start and running checks in operator’s handbook, Checks to prepare machine for work.
  • Filling-in  – Changing buckets and positioning the Excavator, re-instating procedures, re-instating techniques.
  • Loading vehicles – Machine compatibility and correct bucket, setting up the 180 degree Excavator, loading the vehicle.
  • Soil Stripping / Grading – Selecting the correct bucket, setting up the 180 degree Excavator, Stripping techniques using a 4-in-1 bucket.
  • Changing buckets – Different buckets for the 180 degree Excavator, techniques for changing buckets safely, bucket storage.
  • Shutting down & securing – Parking the 180 degree Excavator safely, shutting off and securing the machine.
  • Assessments – Multiple choice theory exam and an on-site Practical assessment

The CSCS 180 Degree Excavator Training Course is mandatory for candidates involved in the operation of excavators on construction sites.

The course is for those who have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee 180 Degree Excavator Operator within the past 2 years.

180 Degree Excavator Novice (Beginner) Training

Additionally, we are pleased to offer 180 Degree Excavator Training for beginners. Candidates who do not have the experience required to attend the ‘Experienced Operator course’ can instead attend the 3-day SOLAS CSCS New Entrant 180 Degree Operator course, specifically designed for novice 180 Excavator Operators.

Requirements

Specific requirements to ensure a smooth learning experience

To attend the CSCS 180 Degree Excavator course for experienced operators, candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  1. Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee 180 Degree Excavator Operator in the past 2 years.
  3. SOLAS Safe Pass: Candidates must possess a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card.
  4. Photo ID: Candidates must present Photo ID at the course for identity verification.
  5. Irish PPSN: Candidates must have an Irish PPS number. 
  6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Candidates must have their own personal protective equipment, including a safety helmet, safety boots, reflective high-visibility jacket and gloves.
  7. Passport Photograph: Candidates must provide a passport-sized photograph to accompany their application.
  8. Candidate Pack Form: Candidates must submit a completed candidate pack form when booking their space, to show that they meet the requirements to attend training. The form must be signed off by a Supervisor / Manager / Employer who can confirm that the candidate meets the minimum requirements.
Legal Requirements

This course is a legal requirement in Ireland

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, it is compulsory for those carrying out certain high risk construction tasks including operating a 180 Degree Excavator to have a relevant CSCS card. The rights and obligations of both employers and employees in relation to health and safety at work are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (as amended). Many of the specific health and safety laws are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007- 2020 and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Both employees and employers have responsibilities and duties around health and safety at work under these regulations. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must provide them with Health & Safety instruction, information and training. This instruction, information and training helps them be ‘competent’, acquire knowledge, skills and attitude for a positive health & safety culture.
