Introduction to
CSCS 360 Degree Excavator – Experienced Operator

If you are an operator of a 360 Degree Excavator, you are legally required (under the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Construction Regulations 2013) to possess the Solas CSCS 360 Degree Excavator card, which is also referred to as a digger ticket. You are required be responsible for your own safety and that of others who are working nearby.

The goal of the SOLAS CSCS 360 Degree Excavator training course is to increase the understanding of experienced 360 Degree Excavator operators on the potential hazards involved in operating this machine. It is intended to give them the information and mindset needed to operate the 360 Degree digger in a safe and compliant manner.

Operators who possess a 360 Degree Excavator ticket are also covered to operate Mini Diggers (up to 6 tonnes).

What you need to know

  • Minimum age requirement for 360 Excavator Training: 18 years old
  • Duration of 360 Excavator course: 1 Day
  • Maximum number of attendees per 360 Excavator course: 3
  • Requirements for 360 Excavator training: SOLAS Safe Pass Card | Irish PPS number | Photo ID | Passport-sized Photo | good written & spoken English | PPE gear | minimum 6 Months experience as a trainee 360 Excavator operator in the past 2 years | completed candidate pack form.
  • Certification for 360 Excavator training: SOLAS CSCS 360 Degree Excavator ticket / card (valid for 5 years), QQI certificate.

Assessments

Candidates must successfully complete 2 assessments – a multiple choice theory assessment and a practical on-site assessment.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a 360 Degree Excavator Experienced Operator Solas CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card and a QQI certificate.

This course is for operators who have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee 360 Degree Excavator operator. For those who do not have the required experience to attend the ‘Experienced Operator’ course, we can offer a 3-day New Entrant 360 Degree Excavator course for beginners (subject to demand). The following topics are covered during the CSCS 360 Degree Excavator course:

  • Legislation & Regulations – Familiarisation with relevant health and safety legislation governing Excavator operations.
  • Employer and employee responsibilities – Minimum legal requirements and guidance for employers, employees and the self-employed who use mobile plant equipment.
  • Safe Working Practices – Safe operating procedures for 360 Degree Excavators.
  • Machine components and functions – Familiarisation with the different parts and functions of the 360 Degree Excavator.
  • Correct operating techniques – Safe & efficient operating procedures for 360 Degree Excavators.
  • Pre-use checks and maintenance – Checks to ensure the 360 Degree Excavator is serviceable and safe to use, as well as basic operator maintenance.
  • Travel – Preparing for site travel, travelling around site and on roads, travelling over rough terrain, up and down inclines and in confined areas.
  • Types and characteristics of materials and load – Selecting the correct excavator buckets and changing buckets depending on the soil present.
  • Site Safety – Understanding the importance of safety on construction sites and identifying potential hazards.
  • Shut down & securing procedures – Selecting a safe parking place, procedures for shutting down and securing the machine.
  • Assessment – Multiple Choice Theory Assessment in the classroom and Practical Assessment on-site.

Who Should Attend

Who Should Attend this Training Course?

The CSCS 360 Degree Excavator Training Course is mandatory for candidates involved in the operation of 360 Degree excavators on construction sites.

The course is for those who have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee 360 Degree Excavator Operator within the past 2 years.

Candidates who do not have the experience required to attend the ‘Experienced Operator course’ can instead attend the 3-day SOLAS CSCS New Entrant 180 Degree Operator course, specifically designed for beginners.

Requirements

Specific requirements to ensure a smooth learning experience

To attend the CSCS 360 Degree Excavator course for experienced operators, candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  1. Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee 360 Degree Excavator Operator in the past 2 years.
  3. SOLAS Safe Pass: Candidates must possess a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card.
  4. Photo ID: Candidates must present Photo ID at the course for identity verification.
  5. Irish PPSN: Candidates must have an Irish PPS number. 
  6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Candidates must have their own personal protective equipment, including a safety helmet, safety boots, reflective high-visibility jacket and gloves.
  7. Passport Photograph: Candidates must provide a passport-sized photograph to accompany their application.
  8. Candidate Pack Form: Candidates must submit a completed candidate pack form when booking their space, to show that they meet the requirements to attend training. The form must be signed off by a Supervisor / Manager / Employer who can confirm that the candidate meets the minimum requirements.
Legal Requirements

This course is a legal requirement in Ireland

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, it is compulsory for those carrying out certain high risk construction tasks including operating a 360 Degree Excavator to have a relevant CSCS card. The rights and obligations of both employers and employees in relation to health and safety at work are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (as amended). Many of the specific health and safety laws are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007- 2020 and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Both employees and employers have responsibilities and duties around health and safety at work under these regulations. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must provide them with Health & Safety instruction, information and training. This instruction, information and training helps them be ‘competent’, acquire knowledge, skills and attitude for a positive health & safety culture.
