CSCS Slinger / Signaller (Banksman) – Experienced Operator

Experienced operators independently carrying out safe lifting operations must be trained and in possession of a CSCS Slinger/Signaller (Banksman) card. A CSCS Slinger/Signaller (Banksman) training course is a legal requirement enabling Slinger Signallers to give the correct hand signals to the crane driver, to choose correct lifting equipment and to sling the load safely on-site.

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, it is compulsory for those carrying out certain high risk construction tasks including safe lifting operations to have a relevant CSCS card.

  • Minimum age to attend Banksman Training: 18 years old
  • Duration of Banksman Course: 1 Day
  • Maximum number of candidates per Banksman course: 4
  • Requirements for Banksman Training: SOLAS Safe Pass Card | Irish PPS number | Photo ID | Passport-sized Photo | good written & spoken English | PPE gear | at least 6 months experience as a trainee Slinger Signaller within the past 2 years | completed candidate pack form.
  • Certification for Banksman Training: SOLAS CSCS Slinger Signaller card (valid for 5 years), QQI certificate.

Assessment

This course requires candidates to undergo a classroom theory assessment and an on-site assessment.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a Solas CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Slinger Signaller card and a special-purpose QQI certificate.

Who Should Attend this Training Course?

The 1-day CSCS Slinger Signaller training course is mandatory for experienced Slinger Signallers (Banksman), who must be trained in the correct use of appropriate signals when working with high rise crane and other such machinery.  

This one day experienced course is for those who have a minimum of 6 months supervised experience operating as a slinger signaller within the last 2 years.

Requirements

Specific requirements to ensure a smooth learning experience

To attend the CSCS Slinger Signaller course for experienced operators, candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  1. Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Experience: Candidates must have at least 6 months experience as a trainee Slinger Signaller within the past 2 years. 
  3. SOLAS Safe Pass: Candidates must possess a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card.
  4. Photo ID: Candidates must present Photo ID at the course for identity verification.
  5. Irish PPSN: Candidates must have an Irish PPS number. 
  6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Candidates must have their own personal protective equipment including a safety helmet, safety boots, reflective high-visibility jacket and gloves.
  7. Passport Photograph: Candidates must provide a passport-sized photograph to accompany their application.
  8. Candidate Pack Form: Candidates must submit a completed candidate pack form when booking their space, to show that they meet the requirements to attend training. The form must be signed off by a Supervisor / Manager / Employer who can confirm that the candidate meets the minimum requirements.

This course is a legal requirement in Ireland

The legal requirements for the Slinger / Signaller (Banksman) training course are mainly governed by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Compliance promotes a safe working environment and reduces the risk of accidents on construction sites. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, it is compulsory for those carrying out certain high risk construction tasks including safe lifting (slinging and signalling) operations to have a relevant CSCS card. The rights and obligations of both employers and employees in relation to health and safety at work are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (as amended). Many of the specific health and safety laws are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007- 2020 and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Both employees and employers have responsibilities and duties around health and safety at work under these regulations. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must provide them with Health & Safety instruction, information and training. This instruction, information and training helps them be ‘competent’, acquire knowledge, skills and attitude for a positive health & safety culture.
