CSCS Location of Underground Services (LUGS) Training

Under the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, persons tasked with LUGS Locating Underground Services must be trained and in possession of a SOLAS CSCS Locating Underground Services (LUGS) card.

This two day Location of Underground Services Training Course (LUGS) equips candidates with vital knowledge of the hazards involved in underground excavation. It is designed to train course participants to effectively plan, manage and execute work where there is a risk of contact with underground energy sources or services using cable avoidance tools and signal generators (CAT & GENNY).

Through practical demonstrations and exercises, delegates master cable avoidance tools such as CAT & GENNY to detect and avoid buried services.

  • Minimum age to attend LUGS training: 18 years old

  • Maximum number of candidates for LUGS course: 4
  • Requirements to attend LUGS training: SOLAS Safe Pass Card | Photo ID | Passport Sized Photo | Irish PPSN | PPE | Some prior experience working with detecting underground services | Completed Candidate Pack Form
  • Certification for LUGS Training: SOLAS CSCS Locating Underground Services Card (valid for 5 years) & QQI Certificate

Assessments

There are 2 assessments to be undertaken by learners – a multiple choice theory assessment in the classroom and a practical assessment out on site.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a Solas CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card for Location of Underground Services and a special-purpose QQI certificate.

Requirements

Specific requirements to ensure a smooth learning experience

To attend the CSCS 180 Degree Excavator course for experienced operators, candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  1. Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Experience: Candidates must have some prior experience of working in Locating Underground Services
  3. SOLAS Safe Pass: Candidates must possess a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card.
  4. Photo ID: Candidates must present Photo ID at the course for identity verification.
  5. Irish PPSN: Candidates must have an Irish PPS number. 
  6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Candidates must have their own personal protective equipment, including a safety helmet, safety boots, reflective high-visibility jacket and gloves.
  7. Passport Photograph: Candidates must provide a passport-sized photograph to accompany their application.
  8. Candidate Pack Form: Candidates must submit a completed candidate pack form when booking their space, to show that they meet the requirements to attend training. The form must be signed off by a Supervisor / Manager / Employer who can confirm that the candidate meets the minimum requirements.

This course is a legal requirement in Ireland

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013 persons carrying out certain tasks including locating underground services, must have a relevant CSCS card. The CSCS Location of Underground Services (LUGS) training course is subject to law to ensure safety and compliance in excavation projects involving underground services. The rights and obligations of both employers and employees in relation to health and safety at work are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (as amended). Many of the specific health and safety laws are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007- 2020 and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Both employees and employers have responsibilities and duties around health and safety at work under these regulations. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must provide them with Health & Safety instruction, information and training. This instruction, information and training helps them be ‘competent’, acquire knowledge, skills and attitude for a positive health & safety culture.
