SOLAS CSCS Signing Lighting & Guarding At Roadworks Training (SLG)

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, SOLAS CSCS Signing Lighting & Guarding At Roadworks Training (SLG) is compulsory for those carrying out certain high risk construction tasks including roadworks to have a relevant CSCS card.

Installation, modification or removal of signage at Roadworks must be supervised by a competent person, i.e. an operator who has a SOLAS CSCS Signing, Lighting and Guarding at Roadworks (SLG) card. They may only leave the site if a CSCS Health and Safety at Roadworks (HSRW) cardholder is present. At all times at least one CSCS Roadworks card holder must be on site.

The course utilises a combination of classroom-based presentations and practical on site, road exercises to provide a well-rounded learning experience. Completing the course prepares participants to fulfil their duties effectively, safely and legally while working on or near roadworks.

  • Certification for SLG Training: SOLAS CSCS Signing, Lighting & Guarding at Roadworks (SLG) card (valid for 5 years), QQI certificate.

Assessments

This course requires candidates to undergo 2 classroom theory tests and a practical assessment out on the road.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a Solas CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card for Signing, Lighting & Guarding at Roadworks and a special-purpose QQI certificate.

SOLAS CSCS Signing Lighting & Guarding At Roadworks Training (SLG) Content

The following topics are covered during the CSCS Signing, Lighting and Guarding at Road course:

  1. Introduction to Traffic Management – learning about traffic management requirements and standards for roadworks sites, as well as the different responsibilities and roles involved in the overall safety management for roadworks.
  2. Roadworks Classifications – Classifying roadworks by road level, roadworks types, traffic flow and location.
  3. Traffic Management Devices – Learning about different signs, delineation devices, barriers, lamps and vehicles used at roadwork sites
  4. Traffic Management Layouts – Planning out roadworks sites, determining the correct choice of control of temporary traffic management systems  for each roadworks type and road type.
  5. Traffic Management Applications – Directing and Supervising Stop/Go Operations, directing and supervising a temporary traffic signal, convoy and works at junctions operations.
  6. Vulnerable Road Users – Assessing the needs of cyclists under varying conditions and selecting suitable temporary traffic management in accordance with standard operating procedures while at roadworks.
  7. Semi Static Works – Plan and supervise a Semi-Static Site at roadworks.
  8. Traffic Management Checks – Completing the required temporary traffic management checks in accordance with safe operating procedures and method statements.
  9. Traffic Management Records – Creating and maintaining records of traffic management checks and operations at roadworks.
  10. Safe System of Installation – Planning and preparing for safe and efficient roadworks operations.
  11. Assessments – Completing 2 classroom theory assessments and a site assessment on the road.

The CSCS Signing, Lighting & Guarding At Roadworks (SLG) training course offered by Must Do Training is mandatory for individuals who are supervising the installation, modification or removal of signage at Roadworks, including:

  1. Experienced Road Workers: who need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to be able to evaluate plans and install a safe system of signing, lighting and guarding at roadworks in accordance with the requirements of the national guidelines.
  2. Construction Site Supervisors and Managers: who need to understand signing, lighting and guarding procedures in order to supervise Roadworks projects to ensure compliance with regulations and  the safety of workers and the public. 
  3. Traffic Management Personnel: Professionals involved in traffic management, will benefit from this course if they have sufficient practical experience. This course is for temporary traffic management supervision and does NOT cover design.
  4. Contractors and Subcontractors: Contractors and subcontractors working on roadwork projects must ensure their employees are adequately trained in signing, lighting, and guarding procedures to maintain safety standards and comply with legal requirements.

 

Overall, the CSCS Signing, Lighting & Guarding At Roadworks (SLG) training course is suitable for operatives installing, modifying or removing signage (and Supervisors of these works) in accordance with Chapter 8 and Temporary Traffic Management Documents. Roadworks must be supervised by a competent person who has been issued with a CSCS Signing, Lighting and Guarding at Roadworks (SLG) card.

Requirements

Specific requirements to ensure a smooth learning experience

To attend the CSCS Signing, Lighting and Guarding at Roadworks course, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old
  2. Experience: Candidates must have minimum 9 months roadworks experience operating as a candidate signing, lighting and guarding operator within the past 2 years
  3. SOLAS Safe Pass: Candidates must possess a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card
  4. Photo ID: Candidates must present Photo ID at the course for identity verification.
  5. Irish PPSN: Candidates must have an Irish PPS number. 
  6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Candidates must have their own personal protective equipment, including a safety helmet, safety boots, reflective high-visibility jacket and gloves.
  7. Passport Photograph: Candidates must provide a passport-sized photograph to accompany their application.
  8. Candidate Pack Form: Candidates must complete a candidate pack form at the time of booking, to show that they meet the requirements to attend training. The form must be signed off by a Supervisor / Manager / Employer who can confirm that the candidate meets the minimum requirements.

Compliance ensures workplace safety and reduces the risk of legal consequences and accidents. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, it is compulsory for those carrying out certain high risk construction tasks including Signing, Lighting & Guarding At Roadworks (SLG) to have a relevant CSCS card.
