Introduction to
SOLAS CSCS Site Dumper – Experienced Operator

Individuals operating a Site Dumper on site are legally obliged to hold a SOLAS CSCS Site Dumper ticket / card. (Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013).

The SOLAS CSCS Site Dumper training course provides certification for experienced Site Dumper Operators, enabling them to comply with their legal obligations. The course aims to raise the operators awareness of the dangers associated with operating this machine. It encourages operators to replace ‘bad’ habits gained on site with good ones, and equips them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to operate the Site Dumper safely and in accordance with legislation and regulations.

What you need to know

  • Minimum age requirement for Site Dumper Training: 18 years old
  • Duration of Site Dumper course: 1 Day
  • Maximum number of attendees per Site Dumper course: 4
  • Requirements for Site Dumper Training: SOLAS Safe Pass Card | Irish PPS number | Photo ID | Passport-sized Photo | good written & spoken English | PPE gear | minimum 6 Months experience as a trainee Site Dumper Operator in the past 2 years | completed candidate pack form.
  • Certification for Site Dumper Training: SOLAS CSCS Site Dumper card (valid for 5 years), QQI certificate.

Assessments

Candidates will undertake a multiple choice theory assessment in the classroom and a practical assessment on the Site Dumper.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a Solas CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card for the Site Dumper (i.e. Site Dumper ticket) and a special-purpose QQI certificate.

Course Content

SOLAS CSCS Site Dumper – Experienced Operator Content

The following topics are covered during the CSCS Site Dumper course:

  • Health, Safety & Welfare Requirements – Legislation, regulations, duties and responsibilities applicable to an operator of a Site Dumper.
  • Pre-start checks – Location of pre-start and running checks in Site Dumper operator’s handbook, checks to prepare the Site Dumper for work.
  • Site travel & manoeuvring (unladen) – Preparing for site travel with the Site Dumper, Travelling the Site Dumper around site and on the road.
  • Setting up to receive loads – Machine compatibility, types of soil/material to be loaded on to the Site Dumper, hazards, Site Dumper positioning.
  • Receiving loads – Driving to loading area and ensuring area is safe and suitable for the Site Dumper, approaching  positioning the Site Dumper to receive loads using signals, positioning of operator during loading procedure. 
  • Transporting loads – Preparing the Site Dumper for travel and load security, travelling the loaded Site Dumper around the site.
  • Discharging loads – Checking the discharge area for suitability and safety, approaching & stopping procedures for the Site Dumper, tipping & skip clearing procedures, Re-configuring the Site Dumper for travel.
  • Retrieval procedures – Determining suitability of towed vehicle/trailer, connection procedures, driving and reversing techniques for the Site Dumper.
  • Placing on & off the transporter – Preparing the loading vehicle, preparing the Site Dumper, hazards, procedure for loading & unloading the Site Dumper.
  • Shutting down & securing – Selecting safe parking place for the Site Dumper, shutting down & securing the Site Dumper safely.
  • Theory Examination & Practical Assessment

Who Should Attend this Training Course?

The CSCS Site Dumper Training Course is mandatory for candidates involved in the operation of Site Dumpers on construction sites.

The course is for those who have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee Site Dumper Operator within the past 2 years.

Site Dumper Training for beginners / novices

Candidates who do not have the experience required to attend the ‘Experienced Operator course’ can instead attend the 3-day SOLAS CSCS New Entrant Site Dumper course, specifically designed for beginners (scheduled subject to demand).

Requirements

Specific requirements to ensure a smooth learning experience

To attend the CSCS Site Dumper course for experienced operators, candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  1. Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee Site Dumper Operator in the past 2 years.
  3. SOLAS Safe Pass: Candidates must possess a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card.
  4. Photo ID: Candidates must present Photo ID at the course for identity verification.
  5. Irish PPSN: Candidates must have an Irish PPS number. 
  6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Candidates must have their own personal protective equipment, including a safety helmet, safety boots, reflective high-visibility jacket and gloves.
  7. Passport Photograph: Candidates must provide a passport-sized photograph to accompany their application.
  8. Candidate Pack Form: Candidates must submit a completed candidate pack form when booking their space, to show that they meet the requirements to attend training. The form must be signed off by a Supervisor / Manager / Employer who can confirm that the candidate meets the minimum requirements.

This course is a legal requirement in Ireland

The CSCS Site Dumper Training course ensures compliance with legal requirements for safe construction site operations. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, it is compulsory for those carrying out certain high risk construction tasks including operating a Site Dumper to have a relevant CSCS card. The rights and obligations of both employers and employees in relation to health and safety at work are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (as amended). Many of the specific health and safety laws are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007- 2020 and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Both employees and employers have responsibilities and duties around health and safety at work under these regulations. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must provide them with Health & Safety instruction, information and training. This instruction, information and training helps them be ‘competent’, acquire knowledge, skills and attitude for a positive health & safety culture.
