Introduction to
CSCS Telescopic Handler Training (Teleporter) – Experienced Operator

By law (Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Construction Regulations 2013), operators of the Telescopic Handler or Teleporter or Telehandler must hold a SOLAS CSCS Telescopic Handler card, also known as a Teleporter Ticket.

This SOLAS CSCS Telescopic Handler training course is geared towards Teleporter or Telescopic Handler Operators who have at least 6 months experience on the Teleporter. This course is designed to increase awareness around the dangers of operating the Teleporter, rectify any bad habits experienced Telescopic Handlers may have picked up, and arm them with the skills they need to operate the Teleporter or Telescopic Handler in compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.

  • Requirements for Telescopic Handler training: SOLAS Safe Pass Card | Irish PPS number | Photo ID | Passport-sized Photo | good written & spoken English | PPE gear | minimum 6 Months experience as a trainee Teleporter Handler in the past 2 years | completed candidate pack form.
  • Certification for Telescopic Handler training: SOLAS CSCS Telescopic Handler ticket / card (valid for 5 years), QQI certificate.

Assessments

In order to successfully complete this course, candidates will undertake a classroom theory test (multiple choice) and a practical assessment on the Telescopic Handler.

Certification

Successful candidates will receive a Solas CSCS card for the Telescopic Handler and a special-purpose QQI certificate.

CSCS Telescopic Handler Training (Teleporter) – Experienced Operator Content

The following topics are covered during the CSCS Telescopic Handler (Teleporter Training) course:

  • Health, Safety & Welfare Requirements – Legislation, regulations, duties and responsibilities applicable to an operator of a Telescopic Handler.
  • Pre-start checks – Location of pre-start and running checks in the Telescopic Handler operator’s handbook, checks to prepare the Teleporter for work
  • Travelling unladen – Preparing for site travel, travelling the teleporter around site or on the road.
  • Interpreting load charts – Identifying and interpreting load centres, identifying rated capacity, interpret information given by loadchart, determine de-rating.
  • Picking up loads – Setting up the Telescopic Handler, determining weight of loads, fork positioning, identifying and dealing with hazards.
  • Travelling laden – Preparing the Teleporter, load security, travelling the Teleporter around site, travelling the Telescopic Handler up and down inclines.
  • Stacking loads – Load Security on the Teleporter, hazards when stacking the Telescopic Handler, following correct procedures.
  • Placing & retrieving loads at height – Determining capability of the Teleporter, evaluating round conditions and other hazards, establishing load-bearing suitability of the platform.
  • Unloading vehicles – Load Security, identifying hazards when unloading with the telescopic handler, following correct procedures when unloading with the teleporter.
  • Placing the teleporter on and off a transporter – Preparing the Telehandler and the transporting vehicle, identifying hazards, loading / unloading procedures for the Teleporter, securing the Telescopic Handler.
  • Shutting down & securing the Teleporter – Selecting safe parking place for the Teleporter, following shut down procedures for the Telescopic Handler, following securing procedures for the Telehandler.
  • Theory Examination & Practical Assessment: Assessing participants’ understanding and application of course concepts through theoretical and practical evaluations.

The CSCS Telescopic Handler (Teleporter) Training Course is mandatory for candidates involved in the operation of Telescopic Handlers or Teleporters on construction sites. This course is specifically intended for individuals who have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee Telescopic Handler / Teleporter Operator within the past 2 years.

Telescopic Handler / Teleporter Training for novices or beginners

For beginners, or those who do not have 6 months experience as a trainee Telescopic Handler operator, we can arrange a 3-day New Entrant course, designed specifically for beginners (subject to demand).

Requirements

Specific requirements to ensure a smooth learning experience

To attend the CSCS Telescopic Handler (Teleporter) course for experienced operators, candidates must meet the following requirements: 

  1. Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a trainee Telescopic Handler / Teleporter Operator in the past 2 years.
  3. SOLAS Safe Pass: Candidates must possess a valid SOLAS Safe Pass card.
  4. Photo ID: Candidates must present Photo ID at the course for identity verification.
  5. Irish PPSN: Candidates must have an Irish PPS number. 
  6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Candidates must have their own personal protective equipment, including a safety helmet, safety boots, reflective high-visibility jacket and gloves.
  7. Passport Photograph: Candidates must provide a passport-sized photograph to accompany their application.
  8. Candidate Pack Form: Candidates must submit a completed candidate pack form when booking their space, to show that they meet the requirements to attend training. The form must be signed off by a Supervisor / Manager / Employer who can confirm that the candidate meets the minimum requirements.

Legal requirements for operating Telescopic Handlers on construction sites is outlined under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Compliance is crucial for workplace safety and regulatory adherence. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013, persons carrying out certain tasks including operating a telescopic handler (teleporter), must have a relevant CSCS card. The rights and obligations of both employers and employees in relation to health and safety at work are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (as amended). Many of the specific health and safety laws are set out in the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007- 2020 and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013. Both employees and employers have responsibilities and duties around health and safety at work under these regulations. Employers have a duty of care to their employees and must provide them with Health & Safety instruction, information and training. This instruction, information and training helps them be ‘competent’, acquire knowledge, skills and attitude for a positive health & safety culture.
